Vital Signs is a school-based science education program that engages students in fieldwork and research. Students collect data in local ecosystems to determine whether invasive species are present or not. They share their findings online with scientists currently researching or managing these species. With Creativity Garden support, students will move beyond ecosystem monitoring to active stewardship. We will develop curriculum and professional development to help teachers extend invasive species monitoring into a multi-week, service-learning project. The project will culminate with students sharing their work with their communities in creative ways, inspiring others to contribute to this citizen science effort.
